Can you believe we are 3/4 the way through the year?
One thing is for certain, Fall is a beautiful time of year for many reasons. For one, spending time outdoors is spectacular during the Autumn months. It's a great time to taking up a hiking trek or enjoying cycling. While there are ideal places we tend to want to experience during Fall, such as Vermont or Breckenridge, the reality is, you can make the best of where you are. I spent years living in Maine and enjoying bike rides to York's Nubble lighthouse. However, since being in Texas the past several years, I've learned that it's up to me to find places within my current surroundings that can give me the same (or close) sense of joy, despite maybe not having access to the hills or coast.
The heat in Texas is starting to subside and give way to cool morning and evenings. Twice a week, I'll hook my bike up to my Golf GTI hatchback, open the sunroof and head to Arborhill Nature Preserve in Plano, Texas. This places is a hidden gem with biking trails, forest, creeks, ponds, some hills, occasional coyotes, and much much more. You can either use the paved walking trail for cycling or jump on the biking trails, built for the avid mountain bikers.
Yes, I know, we always want what we don't have. I get that being by the coast has incredible implications on our mental and physical health. But while you're home wherever you live, find a spot or two that resonates with you and turn it into an experience that can invoke some of those same memories of your coastal vacations or mountain getaways.
I also advise people that finding a favorite scent helps bring those happy memories closer to home. For instance, when I want to feel myself in the mountains, I'll engage the scent of pine and eucalyptus or, if I want to get a taste of the coast, Jasmine or lavender might be more of my preference.
As humans, we have a powerful ability to recreate good or bad experiences. My choice is to always look for the best in my past and build upon it using whatever surrounds me at that very moment. Look around you. What do you see? If it's not good, can you perceive it differently and have a better perspective? Try going to that happier place and welcome that experience over and over again. Then make it a part of where you are today, this Autumn, now.
